  • 214 Years Ago Today: Napoleon Crowns Himself Emperor.
Mark Twain said that France had “two chief traits--love of glory and massacre.” A lot of this can be  traced to the French Revolution  The word “terrorist” first emerged in the English language during this time to describe the French Revolution’s atrocities.
On this day in 1804 Napoleon effectively ended the Revolution by his coronation as emperor – supported, it should be noted by the French voters who were no doubt weary of the radicals.  Aping Charlemagne a millennium earlier,  Napoleon  had the Pope present but unlike even Charlemagne he arrogantly took the crown from the pontiff and crowned himself.
The French Revolution differed in many significant ways from the American Revolution. The latter produced three anti-tax rebellions:  Shay's Rebellion in Massachusetts (1786-7), the Whiskey Rebellion (1795), and Freis Rebellion Philadelphia (1798). The first came to nothing and the latter two were ended by amnesties and pardons. The American Revolution also led to the Constitution (1787-8) which resulted in regular elections  ever since. 
By contrast the French Revolution led to the murder of the king and queen, a radical takeover, the changing of the calendar, the suppression of the church, a reign of terror with the guillotine as the enduring symbol (See photo), and  a dictator who despoiled Europe killing millions. 
France stumbled it way to some respectability in the two centuries after this era ended. 
France and the United States have tended to have an off-again-on-again relationship over the past two centuries from the French and Indian War through the modern crises in the Middle East where France was a colonial power. 
Now France faces it’s worst domestic crisis in years. These are the “Yellow Vest’’ protests — caused  by an increase in the gasoline tax, and named for safety vests worn by the demonstrators. They have burned cars, smashed windows and confronted riot police firing tear gas in Paris. 
The government has announced that it is considering imposing a state of emergency. 
Meanwhile Donald J. Trump 72 and Emanuel Macron 40 continue to work on our countries’ relationship.
